Amazing African Animal Facts
African animals are fascinating creatures. They are all different sizes, shapes and colors. Some are carnivores (eat meat), while others are herbivorous and only eat plants. I have chosen to outline five of the most fascinating African animals. They are: the elephant, the cheetah, the giraffe, the lion, and the zebra. I hope that you will take away some interesting facts about these amazing animals.

The African Elephant is the largest living mammal on land. The elephant is also the only mammal with a lifespan comparable to humans. This picture shows the massive size of the elephant. Elephants are important African animals.

The Cheetah is the fastest land animal, they can bound at speeds up to 113 km/h. Cheetah's accelerate from 0-70 km/h in under 2 seconds. Notice in the picture the way the cheetah is stretched out. This allows them to cover more ground faster.

A Giraffe is the tallest of all living land mammals. They sleep while standing up, and their tongues are blue! Notice in the close up picture of the giraffe the color of the tongue. The other picture shows a giraffe fully standing up to show their incredible height.

The lion is the largest African carnivore. Typically a mature male stands 4 feet at the shoulder and is 8 .5 feet long, plus tail. He'll average 450 pounds. The picture above shows the lion standing up and you should notice his massive size.

The zebra is also called a white rhinoceros and it belongs in the same family as horses. They are the second largest land mammal. Look at the similarities between the size and shape of the zebra compared to the picture of the horse.
